All field trips are contingent upon weather/snow.
Join us on a field trip to Gardnerville, NV to visit the Lahontan National Fish Hatchery. This hatchery is unique in that it holds the brood stock for the Lahontan Cutthroat Trout. This trout, the official state fish of Nevada, is the living relative of the trout that evolved in ancient Lake Lahontan that covered much of this region of Nevada during the Pleistocene. This is the largest inland Cutthroat Trout in the world. The hatchery provides trout to stock Pyramid Lake, Walker Lake (endorheic remnants of Lake Lahontan) and Lake Tahoe. The hatchery also works with Tribal fisheries programs to supply regional tribes with fish for cultural and recreational uses. The field trip will stop at the Zephyr Cove Recreation Area on the return trip to Lake Tahoe for a leisurely lunch in this lakeside recreation area.
